The Wearable Future

In today’s ever advancing world of technology, we have developed many devices, which significantly make our lives easier and more productive. Some current examples are smart phones and tablets. When it comes to technology, we are always looking for products that are faster, better, and more affordable. Recently, there has been continuous talk about smart watches. Although smart watches are a fantastic concept with many uses, there is much more to wearable tech.

First, as discussed, there are many new smart watches coming onto the market. Some major manufacturers include: Samsung, LG, and Pebble. There is excitement though as it is highly likely that Apple will be introducing their new iWatch this coming Tuesday. Samsung arguably has the most popular smart watch currently with their Gear 2. What is so great about the Gear 2 is that it works flawlessly in conjunction with Samsung’s Galaxy smart phones. It is likely that if the iWatch is introduced on Tuesday, we will see the same flawless integration with the iPhone. Some uses for a smart watch would include: wireless payments, faster access to information, communication, and of course….telling time.

The second wearable tech that is becoming more popular is smart glasses. Currently, Google Glass is leading the way with this type of wearable technology. Google Glass, and smart glasses in general, have many uses. The first use is for law enforcement. Police officers can wear Google Glass to record activities such as: traffic stops, arrests, and warranted searches. This helps to keep both officers and civilians in check with the law. The second use is for individuals who might need to look up information on the fly. This would include: lawyers, doctors, and stock brokers to name a few. A third use, which is currently being developed for the future, is a sort of x-ray vision you might say. This would be vital to doctors who could use it to detect diseases and other abnormalities. This would also be helpful to contractors or builders who would need to look into a wall for loose pipes, faulty electrical wiring, or broken studs.

As with any new technology, there will be bugs and a period of time to get used to it. Just like most new technologies though, wearable tech will help to vastly improve our lives. Although I have discussed a few uses of wearable tech, there are countless others depending on your career, industry, and personal use. Wearable tech will be the future of technology, in the same way, smart phones have become almost universal today. Wearable tech, in the long run, will help businesses become more efficient, productive, and have better overall customer service because of the possibilities of having a vast amount of information and knowledge at their fingertips.

  2. Tyler,

Your post is interesting and brings about a good point in were we are shifting as a society and the way we consume content. We have gone from using watches for more than just telling the time. We are communicating with these wearable devices by making phone calls, sending text messages and images that connect us with the people around the globe. Your point about the technology becoming more affordable and portable is absolutely correct. But from a marketing standpoint, when will the wearable take become fashion first and design second.

Think of how retailers market products to consumers. Most shopping decisions are made by women especially those who are married. Often times marketers a have to appeal to the financial decision maker in the house hold. If I wanted to sell you on purchasing a new type of surround sound speaker, the man in the home may be excited about the technology of it. But the decision maker (Mom/Wife) may be more interested in how it is going to look with her new living room furniture. The same can be said with fashion.

Think about Beats headphones. A large amount of women wear the headphones because they are stylish and go with everything else they are wearing even though there are other brands have better sound and build quality for the same or lesser price. As an update to the products available Apple has now released their new smart-watch and they appeal to several types of customers. From the tech minded to the stylish executive. The new era in wearable will soon shift to what is stylish over function.

Tyler, although the posts to your site provide insightful information about wearables and new technology. I think they would get more traffic if you utilized tag managers to track keywords for better SEO optimization. This would help provide search engines accurate search results to drive traffic to your blog. In addition to that it may serve you better to review the title of your blog. This post talks mostly about technology and gadgets and do not directly connect with the entertainment business industry. I would suggest creating an additional blog or revising the title to not confuse the readers.

  3. Wearable technology is defiantly here and in the process of development. Smartphones have come a long way since they first were brought into the marketplace. I think we are still a ways off before they aren't just a gimmick with beta level applications that are running them.

Another thing to keep in mind is that these devices are barely autonomous devices and they require a smartphone to operate. This mean that there is a great amount of room to improve and develop these devices with the hardware and processing speeds, as well as the types of devices you mention.

Its going to be very interesting on how we as the consumers drive the directions that these wearable devices take on.

  4. Tyler,

Your piece on the wearable future is interesting and exciting. I know you may already know this but a few months back I did a video on the Google Glass. It wasn’t anything amazing but it brought up a huge question that even the government cant seem to answer. How can we stop piracy when everything is available from anywhere at anytime? I also noted your highlight on the smart watches. I just wanted to add that I think it is funny; with all of the technology Apple has dumped on us, people are still throwing a fit because their new smart watch is for right-handed folks instead of being universally wearable.
